You must learn some common spellings that are unique to English language. In general, there are 2 types of spelling changes that you need to know:
Soft Vowel Sounds
Soft vowel sounds occur when a word ending with a short vowel has another word beginning with the same vowel. In this case, you add other letters to create unique words.
Hard Vowel Sounds
Hard vowel sounds occur when a word ending with a long vowel or diphthong has another word beginning with the same vowel. In this case, you only change one letter between these two words.

4) Learn Spelling Rules
There are some simple spelling rules which you should follow when writing essays. First, there are 2 ways of doubling the final letters in words: Suffixes which end with an E like ‘-ed’, ‘-ing’, ‘-er’, or ‘-est’ are doubled when the word following them begins with a consonant letter. For example:
